Ice Grips For Shoes Are Essential To Avoid Injury
Ice Grips For Shoes Are Essential To Avoid Injury
Most of us are aware of the increasing number of road accidents that only seem to rise year after year. But how many of us know about accidents that take place every winter that do not involve any vehicle but are caused purely because of the individual’s own carelessness and lethargy in not getting the proper ice grips for their shoes fixed on time?
Indeed, statistics of the past few years reveal a very disturbing trend of increasing number of people slipping on pavements and injuring themselves grievously. The numbers are particularly high in North UK where the build up of ice and snow has been pretty high due to successive harsh winter seasons after a long gap.
Consequently, both the local authorities as well as the people were ill prepared to take the necessary steps in terms of using ice grips or making available the resources to ensure there is no pile up of snow on the pavements respectively.
To their credit, the local authorities have been doing a wonderful job in gritting the roads and vehicular movement has not been affected at all. But the same cannot be said of their pavement management system. Perhaps they have been constrained due to lack of funds and have been truly surprised by the rather arctic winters!
People too have been guilty of being rather complacent in the manner they have gone about preparing for the winter. If only they had made use of ice grips for their shoes, the number of accidents would have shown a far lesser figure.
It is well recognised as to how difficult it is to walk on pavements with ice even with proper footwear. Slippage is high and a fall from even a couple of feet can cause severe bone injuries that can take weeks to heal. The collateral damages in terms of medical costs, leave of absence from work and the physical as well as mental trauma are pretty significant. It is surprising and very frustrating that many in the UK are unaware of these ice grips and the huge benefits they offer.
Ice grips have proved to be a wonderful innovation and can even be gifted during Christmas to people who you know are regular with their outdoor activities. They are basically harnesses that can be attached to the shoes or boots and consist of rubber straps that have spikes built into them for better grip as well as stability.
The best aspect of these ice grips is that they are very affordable as compared to the more expensive winter boots that come with spikes. You can use them whenever you want by just fixing them to your shoes and remove them when not in use.
Not travelling outdoors during harsh winter days is not an option that is feasible. You can enjoy these days provided you take adequate care by making use of these ice grips for your shoes and reduce any chances of slippage.

Why Do Muscles Cramp During Exercise?
Why Do Muscles Cramp During Exercise?
You’re in the middle of your workout, and you’re feeling great. Suddenly, your calf cramps, so you try to stretch it out…but the pain intensifies! What do you do now?
Learn how to prevent and get rid of muscle cramps.
If you’ve ever had muscle cramps, you know they can be extremely painful if not debilitating. Muscle cramps range in intensity from a mild ache to a severe pain.
Contrary to what we have been lead to believe, no one is certain what causes muscle cramps.
There are two scientifically respected theories about exercise and muscle cramps. The first, and most popularized, dehydration or the Electrolyte Imbalance Theory. It states that a muscle may cramp when water and electrolyte levels are depleted, making cramps more likely in hot or high humidity conditions.
Although there is significant evidence to support this theory it does not explain why a cramp can occur when fluid levels are maintained. Studies show that even when electrolytes are replaced at the same rate of loss cramping still occurs in almost 70% of athletes. So while dehydration is implicated for muscle cramps in high temperatures, why do athletes experience them at colder temperature?
This brings us to the second way a muscle may cramp, known as the Neuromuscular Theory. It is physiological in nature. The body has specific protective mechanisms involving the connection between the brain and muscular tissue. Our muscles are guarded by receptors, known as muscle spindles and the golgi tendon organ. Imbedded in our muscles, these receptors protect against over-contracting and over-stretching by sending electrical signals to motor neuron in the spinal cord. During normal contraction these signals are balanced.
However muscle fatigue can cause confusion in the receptor signals causing inhibition of the over-contracting mechanism, resulting in a cramp.
How do I prevent muscle cramps?
Preventing Electrolyte Imbalances
1. Hydration – Keep fluid levels up, especially in events lasting longer than 3 hours.
2. Nutrients – Keep electrolytes balanced with proper levels of calcium and potassium.
Preventing Neuromuscular Imbalances
1. Train adequately for the conditions.
2. Stretch the affected muscle(s) regularly for balanced receptor function.
How do I get rid of a muscle cramp?
1. Lower the intensity of exercise, or stop completely.
2. Try to stay relaxed and gently stretch the area.
3. Apply a firm pressure to the ends of the muscle (acts as a ‘reset’ button for the confused receptors).

50% Of Quitting Smoking Is Your Mindset
50% Of Quitting Smoking Is Your Mindset
By Matt Neumann
When you attempt to quit smoking, and you fail numerous times, you’ll soon realize how important it is to have the correct mindset. You need to be in the right frame of mind, otherwise you’ll just relapse over and over.
You can say to yourself repeatedly that “tonight’s the night” and “I promise I’ll quit tomorrow” or even “I’m not allowed to smoke anymore.” Sound familiar? Have you said those things to yourself before? I know I have, dozens of times. To my friends, who saw me relapse over and over, it became laughable. To me, I was hurting inside. Quitting smoking is not easy at all. It’s the most difficult thing you’ll ever do in your life. If you’re a pack a day smoker, it’s like climbing a mountain.
That’s why having a “quit smoking mindset” is imperative to your success. You need to WANT to quit. You need to want to quit more than anything else. It has to be your #1 priority. If it’s #2 or below, there will always be an excuse to smoke.
You have to be willing to take that one last drag, and then let it go and never look back. You can’t have any regrets, or second thoughts. Those thoughts will only lead to relapse. Why? Because after a few days, you’ll forget about the negative parts of smoking, and why you quit in the first place. You won’t remember how awful it was and how horrible it made you feel. Nicotine will make you only remember the good times with cigarettes, and how good they tasted. You remember that very first cigarette you ever had? Well, once you quit, and stay quit for a few days, that memory will come back to haunt you. Nicotine will make sure of that.
So your “quit smoking mindset” needs to be in place first. You have to be ready to quit for the rest of your life. Once you put out that last cigarette, you are officially a non-smoker. You have to want to be officially a non-smoker. You can’t say, “well, I’ll just quit for right now. Hopefully it sticks this time.” That is not the correct frame of mind. You’re doomed if you think that way.
Once you get it in your head that you’ve quit, you’ll find things much easier to handle. The negative feelings associated with nicotine withdrawal will only be feelings, and they’ll eventually go away. If you take a step back and see the withdrawal for what it really is…just the addiction talking…then you’ll have a great chance at success. It’s having the correct “quit smoking mindset” in the first place that’s the hardest thing to do. Most people aren’t ready, even though they say they are. That’s why people fail. They weren’t ready.
Once you’re truly ready, quit and never look back.

The Effects of Smoking While Pregnant
The Effects of Smoking While Pregnant
For those of you who think that smoking while you are pregnant will not harm your unborn baby, you need to think again. Smoking during pregnancy affects not only you, but your baby’s health before, during, and after you have the baby. The nicotine, carbon monoxide, and numerous other poisons you inhale from a cigarette are carried through your bloodstream and go directly to your unborn baby. These can lead to several problems and complications during the early stages of your baby’s life.
Smoking while you are pregnant lowers the amount of oxygen available to you and your growing baby and also increases your baby’s heart rate. Smoking can also increase the risk that your baby is born prematurely and/or born with a low birth weight. Smoking while you are pregnant can also increase your baby’s risk of developing respiratory problems like pneumonia and even respiratory distress syndrome, which makes a baby have difficulty expanding their lungs and taking in oxygen.
Secondhand smoke can also affect a mother and a baby’s health. Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke from a burning cigarette and smoke exhaled by a smoker. The smoke that burns off the end of the cigarette actually contains more harmful substances then the smoke inhaled by the smoker. Babies exposed to secondhand smoke may also develop reduced lung capacity and are at a higher risk for sudden infant death, also known as SIDS.
For women who are pregnant and want to quit smoking, there are a few tips you can follow. You can stay active to keep your mind off smoking and help relieve tension. You can also talk a walk, exercise, read a book, or try a new hobby. Another good idea is to look for support from others. You could join a support group or smoking cessation program. Don’t even tempt yourself by going places where people are smoking such as bars or clubs, and smoking sections of restaurants.
In closing, if you are pregnant and have a problem with smoking, you really need to get help as soon as possible. There is a little life being created inside of you who is depending on you to take care of yourself so you can in return take care of them. Don’t jeopardize the life of your unborn child to get a quick nicotine rush. It is your job to be the best mother to your child at all costs.

Smoking and Acetaldehyde Addiction
Smoking and Acetaldehyde Addiction
Acetaldehyde is Addictive
Smokers acknowledge that they are addicted to nicotine. Even the tobacco companies these days are admitting that nicotine in cigarettes is addictive. What is not widely known is that other chemicals present in tobacco smoke are also addictive and recent research has identified the chemical acetaldehyde as a potent addictive compound. Acetaldehyde is not a chemical naturally present in tobacco however, when burnt a proportion of the sugars present in the tobacco become converted to acetaldehyde. Not only is acetaldehyde addictive, it also a known carcinogen and therefore implicated in causing cancer.
Nicotine Has a Friend
Experiments in rats have shown that whilst nicotine and acetaldehyde when administered singly are both addictive, when combined they act synergistically. What this means is that nicotine and acetaldehyde interact, reinforcing and enhancing their addictive effects. This may explain why nicotine replacement therapy exhibits only a 20% quit rate as a smoking cessation aid. Furthermore, studies involving denicotinised cigarettes have shown that these cigarettes reduce tobacco cravings and withdrawal, thus indicating that other compounds present in tobacco are addictive in nature.
Smoking and Drinking
The addictive properties of acetaldehyde may also explain the known association between drinking alcohol and smoking. As alcohol is broken down in the liver it produces acetaldehyde. It is well known that smokers who have just given up find it hardest when drinking. Acetaldehyde is also responsible for the ‘alcohol flush’ and some of the symptoms of the classic hangover. In fact acetaldehyde may also be an important factor in the addictive properties of alcohol, leading to alcoholism.
Additives to Tobacco
As mentioned earlier, acetaldehyde is by by-product of burning sugars which just happens to be one of the 599 chemicals routinely added to smoking tobacco by the tobacco companies. These chemicals are supposedly safe and this may well be the case when in the unburnt state. Once burnt many of these chemicals transform into compounds some which have properties which are known to be harmful and some whose properties are unknown, or not fully understood. These additives are said to fulfil a multitude of roles. They increase tobacco’s shelf, slow burn rates, enhance flavour, facilitate nicotine delivery and reduce the harshness of the smoke. The tobacco companies say that sugar is added to tobacco to enhance flavour, although they are well aware of the addictive properties of acetaldehyde, particularly when acting in concert with nicotine; research conducted by Phillip Morris conclusively showed this relationship. Should we be shocked or even surprised? The tobacco industry is big business, and from their perspective it makes good business sense to increase their products ‘attractiveness’ to the consumer.
Other Chemical Candidates?
So it seems that nicotine has a powerful ally in the realm of chemical addiction and both chemicals are present in tobacco smoke. Is it possible that other chemical candidates present in tobacco have an addictive role? As there are 4000 chemicals present in tobacco it is highly conceivable that this is the case and you can be assured that the tobacco companies will have identified them first.
